The World Cetacean Alliance has recognised the waters of the marine strip off the west coast of the island of Tenerife as a World Whale Heritage Site, which is about 22 kilometres long, in the area stretching from Punta El Fraile (Teno) to Punta Salema (Rasca, Las Galletas).

The Councillor for Tourism of the Cabildo, José Gregorio Martín Plata, has indicated that this new distinction is endorsed by the Whale Watching Sustainability Charter and is part of an initiative of the Tenerife Cetaceans Association (ACEST).
Among the elements taken into account to grant recognition to the island is the existence of a resident population of pilot whales unique in the world, some 200 specimens.
